About TS Fireshield and the UK
SMF Crouch and Co’s Thatch-Safe TS-Fireshield is rebranded from their previously marketed fire retardant spray. It is the same formulae but is now manufactured specifically by an expert chemical company in the south of England, following Brexit etc.
Being manufactured in the UK has benefits for both supply and distribution in both the home and international markets.
SMF Crouch and Co Ltd have been supplying thatch fire safety products to the thatch and wider market for over 20 years. They have extensive knowledge of both the product formula and its benefits and range of use. Working with specially approved sprayers to apply the products, ensures the quality of the application. SMF Crouch and Co Ltd supply Treatment Certificates to customers as proof of spraying to standard. They have been successfully treating thatched roofs and timber with fire retardant spray as part of their portfolio of fire safety products.
Thatch-Safe TS-Fireshield (unlike older fire retardants) does not contain any toxic elements (like borates) and are safe to handle.
All products formulas have been tested to ensure they will not react adversely with different kinds of thatch.
Our UK Manufacturers are ISO Accredited. They have a long-standing commitment to quality management, gaining their first accreditation in 1987. They currently hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditations covering quality, environment and occupational health and safety.
Fire retardants, used in the construction industry, have the benefit of increasing fire protection, especially on buildings with risk factors e.g. woodburners, low chimneys, near boundaries or internal structures where there are fire hazards.
Often, Building Control Departments, Conservation Departments, NHBC etc find these products benefits extremely useful. Fire retardant sprays regularly make up part of valuable fire hazard reduction strategies. They also contribute to insurance risk reduction requirements and can therefore make a valuable contribution in reducing insurance premiums.

TS Fireshield – External
This product is produced for external application on a thatched roof (as well as appropriate timber) and the formula has been tested and used worldwide.
In the UK, the formula was previously tested to BS476 Part 3 and it achieved a BA designation. The ‘B’ is for fire penetration into the material and the ‘A’ rating is for spread of flame.
The formula has also been tested under EN 13501-5 and US ASTM-E84
This proven testing, gives peace of mind to homeowners and many insurers offer reduced premiums for treated roofs. Some insurers insist on fire retardant spray treatment if the property has a woodburner, open fire or low chimney.
SMF Crouch and Co Ltd guarantee a correct application for 3 years, although the product formula generally requires reapplication every 5 years. Most insurers recommend 5-yearly. Thatch roofs require external TS Fireshield reapplication mainly due to the wearing of the thatch material.
The best time to apply TS Fireshield is after a total rethatch of the roof or any good maintenance work e.g., a new ridge and coatwork brush-down/dress-up. Reapplication to such roofs after 5 years and then 10 years is not unusual. It therefore fits into a good thatched roof maintenance programme, and can be applied to older roofs.
TS Fireshield – External has a weather-proofing element in its formulation, which is what makes it suitable for the external use.
TS Fireshield Internal
This product has been produced for internal application to thatch.
As it is not subject to the weather, reapplication is not usually required.
